As we age, we notice that many things that we used to do are either harder to do or just take longer, for a variety of reasons. Most are in denial about this diminished capacity, but it’s part of the normal ageing process. While many seniors keep active, both physically and mentally, there are many who can’t or won’t due to medical, family, financial or mental issues.
Here are a few reasons why seniors or the elderly need self defense products:
1). Physical limitations due to age or medical conditions may limit their strength, vision, or hearing. They may be too physically weak or frail to fight off an attacker. They may not have good vision to see who’s at the door, or to recognize a shady character lurking around. They may not be able to hear a window breaking due to hearing problems, a loud TV or radio, or being on a different level in their home. What if one is confined to bed or a wheelchair, walks with a cane or carries around an oxygen tank? How can he or she defend themselves if there’s a break-in? Keeping a loud ear-piercing personal alarm or a high voltage stun gun with them will fend off an attack.
2). Mental limitations such as diminished awareness, slowed thinking, forgetfulness, and being too trusting may also lead to becoming a victim. They may not realize what’s going on around them, they may forget to lock doors and windows, and they may trust anyone who comes to their door. If their thinking is slow, they may not be able to react quickly enough in a possible bad situation. A few years ago, my dad answered his door and let a lady in. My mom came into the room and asked who she was. My dad replied, “Oh, it’s Mary, from across the street”. My mom gave him a look and said, “No, it’s not.” It was a saleslady who happened to look like one of their neighbors. This situation could have turned out worse.
3). Housing situations may lead to break-ins and attacks. Living alone in a home with many windows or sliding patio doors where they may forget to lock up or where there are cheap locks or none at all. If the front door doesn’t have a peephole or a chain, an attacker may shove the door when opened and walk right in. Maybe they live in a rural area or a safe neighborhood, where “no one” locks their doors.
Keeping fit, being active both physically and mentally can help protect us as we age. No matter the age, carrying some type of small, easy to use self-defense weapon will also remind us to be aware of our surroundings.
