Icelandic phone books are in alphabetical order … by first names. The reason is that male surnames in Iceland are created by adding “sson” to the father’s first name and female surnames by adding “dottir” to the mother’s first name, making surnames somewhat redundant.
According to health experts, we should all be following the lead of the continentals, as colds, flu viruses and even some stomach bugs are more readily passed on via a handshake than by a kiss on the cheek.
While it would be nicer to think that there were more romantic reasons for a bride to carry a bouquet of flowers, many sources report that the real explanation is actually quite unsavory. Apparently, the tradition started back in the 15th century when people took their annual baths in May, but generally got married during the month of June. The scent of the bouquet was intended to mask the smell of body odor!
